Surrealism , the word of the year acknowledged by Merriam-Webster in 2016. The word itself has became a catch-all for the bizarre , the irrational , the hallucinatory and basically the definition of weird in all aspects that exists.
The term surrealism first appeared in the writing of French poet Guillaume Apollinaire who used it in 1917 to describe Jean Cocteau's ballet parade and his own play " The Breast of Tiresias ". For Apollinaire surrealism meant the fruits of a human imagination freed from the task of imitating nature.
Surrealism began as an art movement in France in 1924 founded by a writer and poet Andre Breton , he wasn't just writer and a poet. In fact , he was also trained in medicine and psychiatry. He used Sigmund Freuds psychoanalytic methods which played a big role on how he founded surrealism.
Our mind can be divided by two part we have the conscious and the subconscious aspect. Mostly we're using our conscious in our everyday task to think and to experience while the subconscious mind is dormant , we don't directly feel it. It contains a lot of information but communicates to us in an indirect and subtle way for example when we're sleeping and when our dreams pops up , that means our subconscious mind is active. Basically the subconscious mind is the most valuable aspect that we use to determine a surreal artwork.
So what exactly is surrealism you ask ? Breton wrote it as depicting the real functioning of thought. Dictation of thought in the absence of all control excercised by reason , outside of all aesthetic and moral preoccupation. In other words ,it's when you let your subconscious mind take part without limiting it with the rational thoughts. It merges conscious reality with subconscious reality creating surreality .The result is an art which is appreciated for its strangeness and odd-like artwork.
I had no idea what was surrealism until now and to me it took a while for me to actually understand what surrealism is because honestly it's very peculiar. Not everyone have the ability to see things using their subconscious mind and it's a gift for those that can.
