Ok , so first of all i don't usually watch documentary films but i do however watch the short documentaries like for example in National Geographic. A documentary is a television or radio programme, or a film, which shows real events or provides information about a particular subject based on facts.
A documentary was intended to document some aspect of reality for the purposes of instruction, education, or treasuring historical record meaning they are to play an actual situation of something that happened either right in the spot or duplicating an actual incident that happened before. Documentaries usually shows a re-enactment of an incident but they don't stray too far off from the true story. Since producing a documentary isn't limited to any boundaries they can be described as a cinematic tradition as long as they stay on subject at hand.
Documentaries have genre just like films, although a documentary genres aren't as much as films because they're bind with the true facts and not a fictional story.

The differences
So , documentaries are usually aimed to educate the people thus providing an accurate representation of real events that happened , people and situations. While a film on the other hand tells us a fictional story where they places , events , people can be made up and not to mention it's scripted. A film main purposes are to entertain while including hidden lesson in their films.
Furthermore, documentaries will only deal with the event that happened thus reality while films mostly deals with fiction. This part depends on the viewer itself , some people prefer to watch a story which is close to accurate representation of the subject matter so they would choose a documentary over a film while a fan of fictions might be the opposite.
In terms of cost , documentaries usually have a low budget because most of the filming done is by the person itself and doesn't require as much of editing like in a film. They also don't require a lot of actors for their documentaries thus a lower budget is acceptable. A film might have a higher budget than documentary because they have to pay more for the extra actors/computer-generated imagery ( CGI and Visual Effects )/ the location which also based on CGI.
One of the biggest difference for me is how a documentary isn't scripted while a film is scripted. This means that the actions that do happen in a documentary was actually real and spontaneous , no one plans it beforehand thus making it more genuine. Films are usually scripted and this means their dialogues and the action that's about to happen in a film are all already plan beforehand. The actors know what to do , what to say , what to react and how to react. They know everything and sometimes this can lead to a non-genuine feeling but this can be overcome by hiring some very talented actors that sometimes actually impromptu their dialogues thus making it much more interesting.

Among of some other documentaries that i have watched , this documentary titled " Video Games The Movie " has a special place in my heart. The documentary is about video games and how has it evolved throughout the years. This documentary shows the first inventor of a video game and how he changed the world with his invention that's now currently have one of the most largest fan base all over the globe.
In conclusion , documentaries are real life stories re-created for the public audience. Everyone can watch them not just for the subject matter but at the same time enjoy it as an entertainment as well.
