The movie starts with Guido arriving at the city to work for his uncle. Miracalously he bumped into Dora a local woman in the city and they share some jokes with each other before eventually ending up as a couple and had a son name Giosue
They had pratically a perfect family with no problems and all until the World War 2 broke out where the Nazi's forced Guido and his son were seized and taken to a concentration camp for being Jewish. Since Dora isn't Jewish , she was free from this but after hearing the news where her family was taken by the Nazi's she demanded to board the same train to where they're taken to and she was also taken to the same concentration camp.
At the camp , Guido and his son was seperated with their wife/mother respectively , this is where things starts to kicked in.
Guido is trying to hide the harsh reality to his son and kept saying that all of this is just a game and its nothing to be worry about. Guido said that they're participating in a game where every players are rewared with points and the first one to achieve one thousand points will win a tank. As a child that's barely knowing anything Giosue believed what his father said and wanted to win the game as soon as possible. This allowed Guido to keep his son to go motivated on winning the game thus increasing his chance to survive in the camp and also hiding the harsh reality from him.
After a while the the other captives noticed that he was making all these up for the sake of his son and they ended up tagging along in it like providing any help that they can to keep his son safe.
At the end of the movie , Guido guided his son to hide in a box because the Allied Forces were rumored to approach the camp which results in the Nazi's having to shut down the camp. Guido told his son to hide in there until the Allied Forces comes by , Guido searched for his wife only to be caught by the Nazi's. Before he was executed, Guido winked to his son with a smile before he was shot by the soldier.

Giosue still in the game that was instructed by his father emerged when the Allied Forces arrived at the camp and rescued the prisoners. Giosue was later reunited with his mother when they were in proccession to leave the camp.
This movie was set during ( The Holocaust ) which some people find it offensive but this movie focused on the family bonding and the events that happened during World War 2. The way i see it is that the movie is an example of a few of the bunch more out there that experienced the same thing during The Holocaust , some people made it out alive and some didn't. This movie showed how much a father is willing to protect his son because he loves him and how Guido sneaked in the radio station just so that he could talk to his wife despite the harmful situation he was in.
In conclusion , the movie took a different approach towards the historical moment that happened by making comedy as it's main base , although some people find it offensive but try looking it in a different perspective. The bonding that happened in a family , the struggles they went through during the Holocaust. Overall the movie is worth watching and definitely a bit different from the other war-event movies.
