The hidden truth about Postmodernism

Postmodernism , ever heard of this ? well certainly not me. At least now we have but what is it exactly ? Postmodernism is a broad movement that was developed in the mid to late 20th century across multiple different platforms that were also marked as the departure from the modernism. Those platforms are Western philosophy, arts, architecture and criticism. Postmodernism can also be described as the straightforward denial of general philosophical perspective that was widely disregard during the 18th or the 19 centuries.

Postmodernism has and still is typically defined by an attitude of skepticism, irony or rejection toward grand narratives, ideologies and various tenets of universalism, including objective notions of reason, human nature, social progress, moral universalism, absolute truth, and objective reality. Instead, it asserts to varying degrees that claims to knowledge and truth are products of social, historical or political discourses or interpretations, and are therefore contextual or socially constructed. Accordingly, postmodern thought is broadly characterized by tendencies to epistemological and moral relativism, pluralism, irreverence and self-referentiality.

" Postmodernism ” was a term coined by Arnold Toynbee (1889-1975) early in the century to refer to the last quarter of the 19th century, a time where capitalism and imperialism and Western civilization in general began to decline. For Toynbee, this new period, beginning in 1875 actually coincided with the modernist avant-garde in the art world of Paris. However, Toynbee examining a larger swarth of history and noted the rise of “mass:” mass culture, mass education and mass culture. When he died in 1975, the “post-modern” was already ninety years old but the intellectual world was just beginning to incorporate the concept. At first, in the art world, the term simply meant, “after” Modernism; but by the mid 1970s, Postmodernism came to refer more and more to a theoretical stance, rather than to a temporal event.

Arnold Tonybee
In simpler words , postmodernism is a general and wide-ranging term which is applied to literature, art, philosophy, architecture, fiction, and cultural and literary criticism, among others. Postmodernism is largely a reaction to the assumed certainty of scientific, or objective, efforts to explain reality. In essence, it stems from a recognition that reality is not simply mirrored in human understanding of it, but rather, is constructed as the mind tries to understand its own particular and personal reality. For this reason, postmodernism is highly skeptical of explanations which claim to be valid for all groups, cultures, traditions, or races, and instead focuses on the relative truths of each person. In the postmodern understanding, interpretation is everything; reality only comes into being through our interpretations of what the world means to us individually. Postmodernism relies on concrete experience over abstract principles, knowing always that the outcome of one's own experience will necessarily be fallible and relative, rather than certain and universal.

Postmodernism is " post " because it is denies the existence of any ultimate principles, and it lacks the optimism of there being a scientific, philosophical, or religious truth which will explain everything for everybody - a characterisitic of the so-called "modern" mind. The paradox of the postmodern position is that, in placing all principles under the scrutiny of its skepticism, it must realize that even its own principles are not beyond questioning. As the philospher Richard Tarnas states, postmodernism " cannot on its own principles ultimately justify itself any more than can the various metaphysical overviews against which the postmodern mind has defined itself. My take on Advertising Design class - Week 1

So, this is basically my fourth AD class as an advertising student. Let's see, my first sem was more towards making a poster digitally then my second sem is making motion graphics with logos that has already been established, i remembered mine was for llaollao. Third sem is making a  new logo, product, mobile app and a short video. I think i learnt a lot from this class especially in designing and how to make it more appealing towards my target audience. It's helpful especially if i were to go to an advertising agency when i graduate or for an internship, however this class doesn't really teach you on the technicalities besides relying on the other class that you're taking or self taught. The lecturers are basically our clients and we're meant to please their taste in designs and do amends according to how they want it which is basically how it works in the real world so i think that's a good start. I learnt how to do motion graphics, 3D modelling etc. and i...

DTC - WEEK 6 ENTRY 1

Most of our group members are quiet and busy with their own thing and luckily me and Uzair are in the same faculty so we see each other more often to talk about our DTC project and although we've started to do some basic sketching on the how the design of the website are going to look like we still can't proceed with it because our other group members are up to their own assignments and i am left with Uzair to do the rest.

DTC - WEEK 8 ENTRY 2

It is finally over! after 4 weeks of frustration and restless sleeps DTC is finally over and I am so glad that I am done with this because i have tons of other assignments to worry about! Although i overslept for a bit , i still managed to arrive to day on time and when i reached there my group mate Uzair was setting up our pitch deck and then later came Harith and Si lence was the last to arrive. Today wasn't a good day at all, coincidentally all of us ran out of ink printers so we couldn't print it the night before and we were hoping that we could print it in the morning before the DTC but sadly even the 24hrs printing shop were closed today because of raya haji so Uzair only managed to print out the value proposition canvas and the project title that i designed yesterday. Our pitch deck wasn't perfect but it's standing at least. It may looked bland but we have all the information in our laptops. We waited for a while until the our first judge came to our ...
