In this entry i'll be sharing about the basic theories of environmental design and how we it have a greater impact than we thought on about the engagement between the brand and the audience.
There is a total of 8 basic theories which are; Space, Forms, The Flow, The Material and Surfaces, The Print Elements, The Screen Elements, The Human Elements and last but not least The Technologies. I'll be explaining briefly on each of these aspect.
Space; there's a total of two category in space which is a functional space and a common space. A functional space acts as an area that is designed specifically to conduct activities to achieve a special goal or objective, for example a kiosk giving out free samples of their beverages the purpose of the kiosk is giving out samples and that area is their functional space. It is also worth noting that providing a smooth and optimal traffic flow is one of the functional space fundamentals.
The next in line is common space. Common space acts mostly as a white area for the people go rest or have a drink and have a light discussion between the other or with the brand itself. Common space isn't necessary for every kiosk or exhibition but if chosen to include one should be placed strategically like in the middle or at a foyer.
Forms; it is how the audience sees a brand's exhibition or kiosk. Whether it's recognizable from afar or whether their design correlates with their big idea. It should reflect the overall big idea of a brand and further usage of colours, lighting or shadows could even make it stand out from fhe rest.
Furthermore, the flow of an exhibition plays an important role too because as a brand we wouldn't want our audience to stray away too far from the given pathway so that they could have an optimal experience like what the brand has in mind. Generally, it is an interaction between space and sections in an exhibition.
The print elements are well the elements that is physically printed like a banner, poster, standees etc. However, these aren't limited to just the one's listed. The wall itself could be a printed materials such as a visually design wallpaper to suit a brand's big idea better. The most important is the integration betaden type and image so the audience could understand the information that a brand's trying to highlight.
The screen elements; such as a television, a tablet or a touch screen kiosk as long as its a screen based where the audience can see it then that counts too. It is basically the touch point between the audience and the brand.
Moreover, the human elements also plays a major role as having a real human that could engage with the audience is better because human interactions are able to provide a more spontaneous reactions and they are able to demonstrate how a specific thing works which makes it easier for the audience to understand.
Materials and surface could further enhance an audience experience at an exhibition if its done correctly. For example, using man made objects to replicate or imitate a real life/nature made say a cloud. We could use a cotton bud to imitate a cloud and the audience would still have the feeling of immersion because of it.
Last but not least is the technologies. A good usage of technology could help in communicating ideas through a specific technology such as programming a projector that would react to your shadow and of course its not limited to this, it has endless possibilities and if executed correctly could achieve great outcomes.
Overall, this has opened my eyes to see exhibition and kiosk in a different way that makes me think a lot more which is always a good thing!
